This attitude is called “Made in Italy dell’ingegno” and it gives rise to the Call4Startup Fincantieri | Green Transition & Operational Excellence. These are two challenges are dedicated to startups and SMEs to identify projects and opportunities in the strategic sectors in which Fincantieri operates, to foster the cross-contamination of technologies, optimize processes and promote sustainable growth.

Proof of Concept

Selected startups and SMEs will have the opportunity to develop a PoC (Proof of Concept) in collaboration with Fincantieri, the initiative’s promoter, with the support of Cariplo Factory. 

Thanks to the PoC, startups and innovative SMEs will be able to test their solutions and validate their technology in a controlled environment, tailored to Fincantieri’s specific “use cases”, allowing Fincantieri to evaluate potential opportunities for adopting the tested solutions. 

Challenge 1

GREEN TRANSITION

The challenge dedicated to the Green Transition aims to identify innovative solutions to support the energy transition of ships through the optimization of consumption, new power generation systems and the energy efficiency of systems.

Optimization of fuel consumption

Solutions aimed at reducing hydrodynamic resistance, assisting propulsion with alternative technologies and optimizing navigation profiles to reduce consumption, optimize fuel use and improve the ship’s energy efficiency.

 

Energy efficiency of the ship's systems

Solutions for improving the energy efficiency of ships through the optimization of onboard systems, such as desalination plants for potable water production (ballast water treatment systems), heat recovery systems, waste management and steam production systems. This includes both hardware and software solutions for analysing electrical consumption.  

Power generation

Solutions for the storage and conversion of traditional or alternative fuels to reduce emissions. The aim is to implement storage systems (tanks), fuel-to-electricity conversion systems and emission limitation and capture solutions (carbon capture or innovative alternatives to traditional catalytic systems).

Challenge 2

OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE

The challenge aims to identify innovative digital solutions to improve shipyard operations through the optimization of production processes, remote tracking and connectivity, aiming at reducing time and costs and increasing final quality. 

Remote assistance

Innovative solutions that support the problem-solving process in production and post-sales assistance. These solutions will facilitate evaluations and decisions by enabling interaction between onsite and remote operators. This includes hardware and software solutions for asset monitoring. The goal is to minimize the parameters to be acquired, allowing the monitoring of asset health and enabling timely interventions. 

Advanced vision technologies

Advanced vision technologies that enable progress tracking and production control. The goal is to detect unsafe situations, automate processes and support decision making with technologies characterized by ease and flexibility of use (e.g., LIDAR, recognition cameras, 3D scanners, advanced photogrammetry, computer vision). 

 

 

 

Tracking

Smart tracking hardware and software solutions for as-built tracking. The goal is to track processes and activities, input and output components throughout the value chain, including the product’s useful life and maintenance. These solutions must be multi-hardware and may include integrations with MES (Manufacturing Execution System) and WMS (Warehouse Management System). 

 

 

Logistics optimization

Solutions for optimizing logistics and production layouts by improving the logistical flow and asset management in the shipyard, including as-is analysis and simulations of alternative layouts.

Timeline

Application Collection | July 25th – September 24th, 2024 
Startups and innovative SMEs can submit their applications by filling out the application form (link) by September 24th, 2024. 

Evaluation and selection of applications | October 2024 
Following the scouting phase, Fincantieri and Cariplo Factory will initiate an evaluation process to select the innovative entities that will have access to the Selection Day. 

Selection Day | October/November 2024
Selected startups and innovative SMEs with the highest potential will participate in a presentation and discussion event with Fincantieri. During this event, Fincantieri will evaluate the solutions that best align with its business needs and select the startups and innovative SMEs that will advance to the next stages of the initiative, dedicated to POC development.

 

Proof of Concept | TBD 
Startups and innovative SMEs selected after the Demo Day will have the opportunity to develop a PoC with Fincantieri, with potential opportunities for adopting the tested solutions.
