Scenario
With over 230 years of history and more than 7,000 vessels built, Fincantieri is the global leader in high-value-added shipbuilding across the cruise, defense, and offshore sectors. Today, the Group is focused on developing the ship of the future—one that is increasingly green and digital. To achieve this, Fincantieri is investing in innovative, practical, and effective solutions that enhance the distinctiveness and competitiveness of the company, its products, and the broader industry.
This forward-thinking approach, known as the “Made in Italy of Ingenuity,” inspired the launch of Call4Startup Fincantieri | Green Transition & Operational Excellence. The initiative features two challenges, for startup and SMEs, aimed at identifying projects and opportunities in Fincantieri’s strategic sectors, fostering cross-pollination of technologies, optimizing processes, and promoting sustainable growth.
Proof of Concept
Selected startups and SMEs will have the opportunity to develop a Proof of Concept (PoC) in collaboration with Fincantieri, supported by Cariplo Factory.
Through the PoC, these innovators can test their solutions and validate their technology in a controlled environment tailored to Fincantieri’s specific use cases. This collaboration allows Fincantieri to evaluate potential opportunities for adopting the tested solutions.

Challenge 1

GREEN TRANSITION
The Green Transition challenge aims to identify innovative solutions that support the energy transition of ships through consumption optimization, new power generation systems, and improved energy efficiency.
Fuel Consumption Optimization
Solutions to reduce hydrodynamic resistance, assist propulsion with alternative technologies, and optimize navigation profiles to lower fuel consumption, enhance fuel utilization, and improve the ship’s overall energy efficiency.
Energy Efficiency of Ship Systems
Solutions for improving the energy efficiency of onboard systems, including desalination systems for potable water production, ballast water treatment systems, heat recovery systems, waste management, and steam production systems. Hardware and software solutions for analyzing electrical consumption are also included.
Power Generation
Solutions for storing and converting traditional or alternative fuels to reduce emissions. This includes storage systems (tanks), fuel-to-electricity conversion systems, and emission reduction or capture technologies (e.g., carbon capture or alternative catalytic systems).
Challenge 2

OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE
The second challenge focuses on identifying innovative digital solutions to improve shipyard operations through production process optimization, remote tracking and connectivity, aiming to reduce time and costs while enhancing final quality.
Remote Assistance
Innovative solutions to support problem-solving during production and post-sale assistance. These solutions facilitate evaluations and decision-making by improving interaction between onsite and remote operators. Hardware and software for asset monitoring are also included, enabling timely intervention by minimizing the data acquisition requirements for health monitoring of assets.
Advanced Vision Technologies
Advanced vision technologies for progress tracking and production control. These solutions can detect unsafe conditions, automate processes, and support decision-making with user-friendly, flexible tools (e.g., LIDAR, recognition cameras, 3D scanners, advanced photogrammetry, and computer vision).
Tracking
Hardware and software solutions for smart tracking of as-built processes. These aim to monitor processes and activities, as well as input and output components, across the entire value chain, including the product’s lifecycle and maintenance. These solutions must be multi-hardware compatible and may include integrations with MES (Manufacturing Execution System) and WMS (Warehouse Management System).
Logistics Optimization
Solutions to optimize logistics and production layouts by improving the flow of materials and asset management in shipyards. This includes as-is analysis and simulations of alternative layouts.
Timeline
Application Process | 25 July – 30 September 2024
Startups and innovative SMEs can submit their applications by completing the application form by September 30, 2024.
Evaluation and selection of applications
Following the scouting phase, a joint evaluation process by Fincantieri and Cariplo Factory will be initiated to select innovative companies eligible for the Selection Day.
Selection Day | October/November 2024
Selected high-potential companies will participate in a presentation and discussion event with Fincantieri. During this event, Fincantieri will evaluate the solutions that best align with its business needs and choose the companies to advance to the next phases of the initiative, focused on PoC development.
Proof of Concept | TBD
Companies selected after the Demo Day will have the opportunity to develop a Proof of Concept (PoC) in collaboration with Fincantieri, with potential opportunities for the adoption of the tested solutions.
